Kids Tennis Program

Now that Thunder Bay is in Phase 2 of re-opening and the OTA has recommended that small group tennis lessons can be delivered safely, T.B.C.T.C. is confident offering our Kids Tennis Program this summer.  The procedural changes to the program that have had to take place are outlined below.

Dates:   June 28  – August 6 (running 6 weeks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday)

Cost:   $70 with the purchase of a membership (total cost is $165 – $175)

Age: 6-18 (must be turning 6 years old this year)

How to pay: Visit thunderbaytennis.com, select ‘registration’ and scroll down to the appropriate JUNIOR / JUVENILE tab, or if membership already purchased then go to Program Descriptions.

Due to Covid 19 we will be making some changes as per gov’t protocols:

  1. Group sizes will be 6 kids to 1 instructor ratio. The smaller groups will make the lessons more active for the children and allow for proper social distancing.
  2. Because there is a smaller group size we may be running more Group times!
  3. The class times will run for 45 min time blocks which is needed to ensure proper distancing while entering and exiting the facility.
  4. Start times will begin at 9 a.m. and run on the hour followed at 10, 11, 12, and 1 p.m. More groups will be added if needed.
  5. Sign ups will be on a first come first serve basis. Kids must be at the same level (verified by staff) so that groups are appropriate.
  6. There will be a “Coach Zone” that the coach will stand in ensuring that social distancing can be observed during instruction.
  7. Each Coach will have hand sanitizer which the kids can use often. Any teaching aids will be cleaned regularly.
  8. Courts will be marked to ensure that kids are aware of their playing zone to ensure physical distancing is observed.
  9. A no touch policy of tennis balls in the program will be followed.

New Arrival Procedures:

Designated waiting areas for students at the beginning of classes will be behind their respective court on the outside of the facility on the grass area. A ribbon will be placed on the fence 7 feet apart where the kids with or without a parent can wait while being well spaced out.

Public Courts Program Not Available due to COVID 19

The City of Thunder Bay maintains a number of pubic tennis courts. Play on these courts is free of charge on a first come first serve basis.  Although the courts are not supervised, players are asked to show courtesy and respect the right of waiting players to enjoy time on the courts. There are tennis facilities at Volunteer Pool, Hammarskjold High School, South Neebing Park, Oliver Road Community Centre, County Park and Rosslyn Road

Instruction for junior tennis players is offered on many of Thunder Bay’s public courts.  Qualified instructors will help children ages 8 -16 learn to play the sport of tennis and/or improve their existing skills.  The cost for the program is $40 per child or $100 per family per session.  The focus of these clinics is to give the beginner or novice  junior player an introduction (or re-introduction) to the game.  Basic stroke production beginning with the forehand, backhand, serve and volley will be taught.  Lessons then progress to the basic skills of match play including rules and strategy.  Emphasis will be placed on fun, sportsmanship and skill development.  The two court instructional period includes one hour of instruction followed by one hour of organized games focusing on skill usage and/or match play.  Of course all participants are encouraged to stay after the formal lesson time is completed to practise what they have learned and to have fun.  This period of time is not supervised.

The program winds up with an invitation to the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre for a couple hours of fun on the tennis courts that have witnessed some of Canada’s best players compete for over $10,000 of prize money.
